AN INTRODUCTION TO NEW ZEALAND RUGBY T-SHIRT VINTAGE
The Vintage New Zealand Rugby T-Shirt is an exceptional quality garment. It is inspired by the famous history of the great former All Black teams.
The first ever Rugby World Cup was staged in 1987. And the matches were hosted in Australia and New Zealand. Sixteen teams entered this inaugural tournament. These included International Rugby Football Board (IRFB) members – Australia, New Zealand and England. It also included Ireland, Scotland, Wales and France. The international sporting boycott of South Africa due to apartheid stopped the Springboks from competing. Argentina, Fiji, Italy, Canada, Romania, Tonga, Japan, Zimbabwe and the United States were all invited. But controversially not Western Samoa.
The IRFB members made it through the group stages along with Fiji. New Zealand were the clear favourites to win the Webb Ellis Trophy. And they comfortably defeated Scotland by 30 points to 8 at the Quarter Final stage. Tries were scored by Alan Whetton and John Gallagher. Grant Fox kicked both conversions and six penalty goals. Scotland could only reply with a lone Gavin Hastings penalty. Wales, France and Australia emerged from the other quarter finals.
ALL BLACKS MET WALES IN THE RUGBY WORLD CUP QUARTER FINAL
On the 14th June 1987, the ‘All Blacks’ played the Wales Rugby Union team. They met in the Semi-final of the 1987 Rugby World Cup. The game was staged at Ballymore in Brisbane, Australia in front of a crowd of 22,576. New Zealand were superior in every aspect of the game thrashing the Welsh by 49 points to 6. Moreover, they scored tries through Mark Brooke-Cowden, John Drake, Buck Shelford, Joe Stanley, Alan Whetton and two from John Kirwan. To add to this total Grant Fox kicked seven conversions and one penalty. Wales could only reply with a try by John Devereux and conversion by Paul Thorburn. Also, Neath’s Lock Forward Huw Richards was sent off for swinging a punch at his opposite All Black forward Gary Whetton.
Surprisingly, Australia conceded crucial tries in the dying seconds of the epic semi-final clash against France.
So, it was France who met New Zealand in the Final. And the hosts adopted a conservative approach to the game. Their fly-half Grant Fox kicked for territory and he made the French pay for any penalties they conceded. Fox finished the game with a total of 17 points. This included four penalties, a drop goal and one conversion. Tries came from All Blacks Captain David Kirk, Michael Jones and John Kirwan. France rallied late in the game with a Pierre Berbizier try. And a conversion and penalty from Didier Camberabero. But it was too late, New Zealand celebrated their famous 29 points to 9 final victory at Eden Park in Auckland.
