The history of The Varsity Match extends back to early 1872. It was a year after the first ever rugby international (Scotland v England). Both Cambridge and Oxford sent officials to arrange a challenge match. At The Parks, Oxford, they played a 20 a-side version of the game with the hosts victorious in this inaugural meeting.

The first Varsity game played in 1872 at The Parks in Oxford. Two years later, a decision came that the fixture should be played on a neutral ground. And both Blackheath and Kensington became venues before Twickenham was chosen in 1921.

Oxfordwore dark blue jerseys for the inaugural game. However, Cambridge played in pink, changing to their blue and white shirtsin 1876. We celebrate the formation of the Varisty fixture which started in 1872 with our Varsity Polo Shirt and Varsity T-Shirt.

The club founded in 1869, some fifteen months before the foundation of the game of Rugby Football. William Webb Ellis, the alleged inventor of the game, was in fact a student at Brasenose College in 1825.

Besides, Major R V Stanleyis famous in Oxford Rugby folklore. And through his hard work and knowledge of the game was invited to be an England Rugby selector. He was a dedicated servant to the Oxford club, organising the Varsity match of 1894. And had a major influence on the committee over a long period. Also, the dark Blues play a Major Stanley Select XV every year as a warm-up to the Varsity Match. The match plays in memory of Major R V Stanley.

After the Second World War in 1951, Oxford made the bold decision to tour Japan and became the first Western team to visit.

About Matches

Cecil Boyle is the very first international player to be capped whilst at Oxford. Boyle represented England in 1873 and there have been many fine playerswearing the Oxford Varsity rugby shirt since.

IRB Hall of Fame.even inducted two of Oxford’s former old boys Alan Rotherham and Gareth Rees.

Further, Alan Rotherham represented England from 1882 to 1887. He is best known for his part in revolutionising half-back play in rugby union. As a first player to the link between the forwards and three-quarters. He was the founder of the passing game. Additionally, his role in the development of rugby got recognition in 2011 with induction to the IRB Hall of Fame. Gareth Lloyd Rees was a Canadian international who played at fly-half and full-back. He played club rugby for Wasps and Harlequins in the UK and won a total of 55 caps for Canada.
