An Introduction to Vintage Wales Rugby T-Shirt

The Vintage Wales Rugby T-Shirt Retro Style is inspired by the history of the many great Wales Rugby Union teams.

Wales were favourites to win the 1976 Five Nations Championship. Although they won the 1975 tournament, they failed to win a Grand Slam. They slipped up in the game against Scotland at Murrayfield going down 12 points to 10. Although Wales scored the only try through Trefor Evans, they were beaten by three penalty goals from Dougie Morgan and a drop goal by Ian McGeechan.

In their opening game was against England at Twickenham on the 17th of January in front of 55,000 fans. Wales rarely looked in any trouble and comfortably defeated a disappointing England Rugby. Tries through Gareth Edwards and two from J.P.R. Williams  plus three conversions from Steve Fenwick and a penalty by Allan Martin. Gave the Welsh a 21 points to 9 scoreline.

Next it was Scotland. This year they were welcomed to the Cardiff Arms Park and a determined Wales team took sweet revenge following the 1975 defeat. They slaughtered Scotland 28 points to 6. Gareth Edwards, Trefor Evans and J.J. Williams scored tries. Phil Bennett kicked 2 conversions and 3 penalties. Steve Fenwick added a drop goal. Andy Irvine replied with a Scotland try and Dougie Morgan added the conversion.

Next Ireland, then France for the 5 Nations Rugby Grand Slam

Wales then made short work of Ireland 34 points to 9 in Dublin. The Welsh backline was in magnificent form. Try scorers were half-backs Gareth Edwards and Phil Bennett. Flying winger Gerald Davies scored a brace of tries. Bennett’s kicking was equally impressive with 3 conversions and 3 penalties. For good measure Allan Martin also added a finely struck penalty goal.

France had shown some good form by defeating Scotland and thrashing Ireland. So it was always going to be a tight game between these great rugby playing nations. France outscored Wales by two tries to one through Jean-Luc Averous and Jean-François Gourdon tries. But the exceptional place kicking of Phil Bennett 2 penalties, Steve Fenwick 2 penalties and Allan Martin 1 penalty made the difference. J.J. Williams scored the Welsh try and Jean-Pierre Romeu booted over a conversion and penalty goal. This made the final score 19 points to 13.

Wales had won their 7th title, with a Grand Slam, and the Triple Crown.
